Hi ! I just serached through google to this page. Excellent information here. I am facing problem with my Seagate Hard disk ST34311A a 4.3 GB hdd of friend. I tried to low level format with Disk Manager 9.5. It did formated the HDD successfully. But when I tried to create partition with DM it gave error like Error reading Partition Table (MBR) Error Code= 1001H Uncorrectable ECC I then tried to replace MBR from backup option in Dm but no use. Can Winhex help in this ? Is it because of bad sector in sector 0 ? awating for yr prompt reply Thanks in advance. |

Sorry, I can't help you with such errors produced by a disk manager because I don't know enough about it. |

Apoorva, you don't need DM to setup the disk. You're better off creating a boot disk and copying format and fdisk to it. DM is only needed for old PCs whose BIOS doesn't support high-capacity drives. I used to used it about 8 months back. So, no, you don't need WH. But, you sure will need to do what I said above. If you have any trouble in doin any of them, please don't hesitate to ask... |

BTW, Stefan, could you email me a zipped copy of fdisk from your PC. WinXP doesn't have 'em. Not that I need it, but useful to have... Thanks! |

I know. I tried to do with fdisk earlier. but i was unable. I tried to fdisk / win98se. It just does verifying integrity. from 1% to 99 % and agin starts from 1% , then 2% and so on . till 4% it took somewhere near 10 minutes for a 4.3 gb seagate hdd. Do u think hard disk is beyond repair ? I tried DiskWizard also but same result. I even used an old motherboard with low level format option but it didnt worked. What u have to say for this ? Thanks Apoorva |

Don't use fdisk first! First, start the PC with the boot disk. Then run CHKDSK/Scandisk to fix any errors that may be there. Then, proceed with the FORMAT. After the format, run FDISK to partition as needed. BTW, I don't understand what you mean over here... "I even used an old motherboard with low level format option but it didnt worked." You mean, your motherboard has a low-level format option or what? Also, just curious but where are you from in India? |
