A beta version of WinHex 10.44 is now available here.

What's new?

* Tools | Disk Tools | File Retrieval. WinHex now offers several file types in a drop-down list, to conveniently select the correct header for recovering files of that type.

* Edit | Modify Data. WinHex can now perform bit-wise AND and OR operations with a fixed byte value.

* An error was fixed that occurred in some situations when writing sectors to a physical hard disk under Windows 95/98/Me.

* Tools | Specialist Tools | Simultaneous Search. A parallel search facility, that lets you specify a virtually unlimited list of search terms, one per line. The search terms are searched simultaneously, and their occurrences can be archived either in the Position Manager, or in a tab-delimited text file, similar to the disk catalog, which can be further processed in MS Excel or any database. WinHex will save
- the offset of each occurrence,
- the search term,
- the name of the file or disk searched, and
- in the case of a logical drive the cluster allocation as well! (i.e. the name and path of the file that is stored at that particular offset, if any)
That means you are now able to systematically search through an entire hard drive in a single pass for words like
drug
cocaine
(street synonym #1 for cocaine)
(street synonym #2 for cocaine)
(street synonym #3 for cocaine)
(street synonym #3 for cocaine, alternative spelling)
(name of dealer #1)
(name of dealer #2)
(name of dealer #3)
at the same time! This will narrow down the examination to a list of files upon which to focus. If you do not have WinHex archive the occurrences, you may use the F3 key to continue the search.

These are awesome enhancements, Stefan. Thanks a bunch. Some things I'd like to see in the future are: 1)scan all files to find headers that don't match listed file type. 2)perform analysis on a range of files.

Good Work.

1) All files on an entire hard drive? To find headers that are not yet contained in the drop-down list?

2) On several files at the same time and mix the results?

1)Yes. A tool that would scan all files on a disk or drive and compare their extension (.doc or .bmp, etc.) with the internal header it is supposed to have. Flag those that don't match and save them to a file.
2) It would be quicker to examine analysis results, if you could group them by directory or file type, and then scroll through the pages with arrows. For example: analyze the files in drive a, then just scroll through the results for a.bmp, b.bmp, c.jpg, d.gif, e.txt. Without having to open each file individually.

These are welcome additions - is it possible to output the results of a "simultaneous" search to a log file?

Yes, into a tab-delimited text file, similar to the disk catalog, which can be further processed in MS Excel or any database.
