A book about X-Ways Forensics will be available next month! Thanks go out to the authors Eric Zimmerman and Brett Shavers and the technical editor Jimmy Weg for this effort. The foreword was thankfully written by the highly respected Craig Ball (a.k.a. "The Ball in your Court"). Thanks to all four of them also for being veteran users and formidable advocates over some 8-10 years.

You can pre-order the book from www.amazon.com/X-Ways-Forensics-Practitioners-Guide-Shavers/dp/0124116051 or www.barnesandnoble.com/w/x-ways-forensics-practitioners-guide-brett-shavers/1115199008?ean=9780124116054 for example.

Happy New Year everyone!

Quiz question: What is the size of the Microsoft update that adds South Sudan to the list of countries in Windows 7? (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2726535)

1) 16 bytes
2) 16 KB
3) 16 MB

Hint: "South Sudan" is 12 characters long.

Answer:
3) 16 MB

For comparison: The X-Ways Forensics download is 9 MB in size (contains the 32-bit and the 64-bit edition).

The popular C4All script is now available as an X-Tension for X-Ways Forensics from the C4All forum and http://www.x-ways.net/forensics/x-tensions/index.html. About 6 times faster as an X-Tension than as an EnScript! Thanks to Steve Frawley, D. F., and Trevor for their great work.

Anyone who has licenses for F-Response that have expired already, no matter how long ago, may order a renewal within the next two weeks!

Usually renewals are offered only within 30 days of the expiry of a license, or before the expiry! Renewals are considerably cheaper than new licenses.

The forum meanwhile supports the HTTPS protocol. You can see that if you access it at www.x-ways.net/winhex/forum/ instead of www.winhex.net.

Dongle insurance is offered for your convenience, protection and peace of mind for many years already (www.x-ways.net/dongle_insurance.html). This is especially helpful during these times where dongles may need to be sent around by postal mail to home offices or back. Again, please do not ask us for a replacement if you lose a dongle that was not insured. Take care everyone.

There is now a separate forum section about X-Tension programming. Please consider subscribing to notifications of postings in that section in your user profile (https://www.x-ways.net/cgi-bin/discus/board-profile.cgi) if you are interested. Those users who had enabled notifications from the computer forensics section will not automatically receive notifications from the new X-Tension programming section.

Since we are receiving multiple requests about this topic, everyone please be informed that neither X-Ways Forensics nor our web site uses "Log4j", so they are not affected by the vulnerability that is in the news these days.

For those who are wondering: The two vulnerabilities that were recently identified in the WinRAR software do not affect X-Ways Forensics even though X-Ways Forensics can decompress RAR archives.
