I mistakenly started to format a floppy with some files on it which I needed. When I used the Disk Editor in WinHex to open the drive, I got the following error:

An error occurred when accessing drive A:. I was hoping to open it in binary format so that I could possibly recover something of what's left. Can I do this or is the diskette hopelessly lost?

I should make a note that I kicked the disk out of the drive before it got to 2% done

You only started to format it, you didn't complete the procedure? In that case it is possible that WinHex cannot open the disk as a logical drive A: because this relies on Windows being able to access the drive. I recommend you open the floppy disk as a physical disk instead. If the disk was not physically damaged (but the logical file structure only), this should work.

And better create an image or backup of the entire disk, so you won't lose more data if anything goes wrong during your recovery attempts.

That did it. I opened it as physical and I am now able to access the diskette.

Thanks Stefan! Once again YOU ARE THE MAN!

You may use the Davory demo to try and recover photos from your card. Try the "Recover by type" method first. If successful, the software will recover the first 200kB of each photograph. In that case, the full version of the software should be able to recover more complete photos, but please note that nobody can guarantee a full recovery of your data.

Davory demo is available here:

Good luck!

Note to recover data:

Do not write file after format to prevent data loss.
