I have several thousand files that have lost their file extension. I want to know if there is a way to search all these and change the extension to whatever it is. I need the files in the original size and name, I just want winhex to search the file headers of each file and rename them or copy them to another directory. Is this possible? I know I can do it with a whole partition, but can I do it on existing files? |

With a forensic license (i.e. X-Ways Forensics), you would - open the partition with Tools | Open Disk - tag the several thousand files - Specialist | Refine Volume Snapshot [x] Verify file types with signatures and algorithms (O) Apply to tagged files only - Options | Directory Browser | [x] Append correct ext. when copying - select the files (maybe after having explored recursively) - right-click the selection - Recovery/Copy |
