It seems that winhex does not support recovery of this file type, is this true? These are files on my JVC Camera.

Winhex supports recovery of any file type, depending on the situation :-) :-)

If you are talking about the file recovery by type function, then it is limited by certain rules yes.

If you can determine a common signature in the file type you are mentioning, and specify it in the "file recovery by type" list, then Winhex should be able to give you results. Although it is obviously influenced by some factors, incl fragmentation and overwriting etc.

(Refer to the manual on how to do the above)

Good luck..

Hmmm. Maybe I wasnt clear in my question, lemme try again.

The MTS file type is a AVCHD video file. (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) and has been around since 2006. I cannot seem to find it among the common signature types in Winhex.

I have inadvertently deleted 2 files that I want to recover. Before any other action could be taken on the camera, I took an image of the card, so there should be no fragmentation nor overwriting.

When I try to save/recover the found deleted file, WinHex tells me it cannot read the file xxxxxx.MTS.

Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed?

I would use a deleted file recovery application like Active@ Undelete.

Or if it's only two files, search for digital signature manually and highlight the data then from the edit menu > Copy Sector > Into New File. That's the hard way! but it works. I know because I've recovered 256 GB video files that way for lab in N. Calif.

Good luck,

Thank you very much, Corrie, I could not have given a better answer.

("Av8tor Online", I wonder whether you understood the "If you can determine a common signature" part, because you still appear to just look at the predefined signatures.)

Got it.

I was able to carve out the files I needed. I couldnt find the common signature for the file type anywhere online, but was able to manually find something unique in the header that pointed me to the top of each file (no idea if it is the signature). With some digging around, I found the end of the file and was able to save all sectors to a file.

Thanks very much for your help, John!

Corrie and Stefan,
I dont have enough information for the MTS file format to edit the Winhex signature file list. So, went manual as john suggested. Thank for your answers, a great forum here.

Could I undelete the file by editing the first letter of the directory entery and inserting the first sector number? I was trying that too, but could not find a way to modifty the first sector number.

(You don't need any information about the file format, just a few sample files.)

No, that is not enough.

> but could not find a way to modifty the first sector number

If you are referring to a directory in the FAT file system, it's a cluster number, not a sector number, and you can change it by overtyping the hex values as intended or by editing low and high word with the appropriate template.
