Hi There, After a physical disk failure, I'm left trying to recover data from an old disk which I have previously reformatted. Winhex is able to find the data via 'find files by type' but the filenames / directories are all messed up and lots of data is duplicated etc. The 'find lost partitions' feature is able to find the partition I'm after, but I'm not sure how to go about restoring it. Is it possible for me to recover the partition with it's filesystem intact? if not is there any way to recover data with filenames intact? Thanx in Advance, Damien. |

WinHex does not restore the partition, it only allows you to copy files off a lost partition that it has found. To recreate a lost partition you would need to edit the partition table accordingly (manually, e.g. using a template). |

Hi Stefan, Thanx for that, I'm a total newb so far as WinHex (or any Hex editor) is concerned. Any chance you (or someone else) could gove me some hints and / or point me in the direction of some documentation on this? I'm not an idiot, I'll figure it out, I'm just afraid of stuffing things up when this is the only chance I have of recovering a lifetimes worth of backups. The thought of redoing 1000+ ID3 tags and re-organising 3000+ photos into the right folders makes me sick to the stomach. Cheer, Damien. |

> Is it possible for me to recover the partition with it's filesystem intact? If you reformatted the disk, parts of the file system might be overwritten. If the recovered partition shows messed up entries, this is most likely. > is there any way to recover data with filenames intact? With WinHex Specialist one can do a 'particularly thorough file system data structure search'. This function makes the best out of damaged file systems. ID3 tags are invariant for 'recover by type'. There is no need for redoing. MP3 files can be renamed based on their ID3 metadata. The same is valid for JPEG files containing EXIF metadata. Such programs are available in the public domain. Data recovery is a time consuming business as well. |
