Hi,

I have a Raid1 setup using 2x160 GB hd, on a win xp, using SiI controller card.

using the raid bios utility I have 'deleted' the raid set and recreated new one WITHOUT formatting or copying data, so I know the data is probably intact.

my problem is with the new raid set created, the drive is not bootable - i get "no boot device available" message.

I would like to know if using WinHex I can recreate the raid to point back to the bootup sequence that is probably still there on the hd.
This will enable me to get the working version of my WinXP with all the softwares installed (not just data) - the whole reason why I wanted Raid1.

thanks in advance.

may be you should boot with single hd. and restore the data to rebuild-raid1.

I tried the following with no luck.

1) removed raid controller card and attached the 1 hd directly to the motherboard to see if it would boot directly...no luck, same msg - no boot device

2) tried boot with one hd connected to the controller.

Could you attach the hd as a slave and check it could be access directly? Maybe the MBR has been damaged.

1 - On most controllers when you delete the RAID configuration, it also deletes at least the partition table and sometimes the boot sector as well.

2 - Depending on what RAID Controller you use - some of the controllers write their own signature (containing the info about the Configuration) at the beginning of the drive within the first few sectors (number of sectors used for this again depending on the controller)

Then beyond that signature you will find the file system signature (boot sector and partition table)

1 - Restore the partition table and boot sector (you need file system knowledge to use winhex for this)

2 - If this is the case, find the partition table and image the whole partition to another disk (starting at sector 0 on the destination disk) and it should be accessible.

The manual is always a good place to start learning how to use winhex for any of its many functions :-)

Good luck

Corrie,

Thank you very much, for the info.

I just wanted to make sure that with WinHex it was possible to do what you just suggested.

I will either look for someone to get this done for me or play around with this myself.
