Hi All, I'm looking for some help please. My CF card died on Holiday a while back and I keep coming back to it recover a whole days worth of our wedding photos. I've tried tonnes of software but have been unsuccessful however I have had my faith restored by ZAR and Winhex. I've never been able to get anywhere with any of the software other than ZAR (Zero Assumption Recovery) which has recovered 5 images, however these appear to be corrupt. two of the files are around 75MB and one around 35MB and then two others at around 45KB. Two of the larger images show a thumbnail image but when opening the photo there is a portion at the very top which is visibly and then the rest of the image is banded with colurs and nothing can be made out. I've opened the files in Winhex and attempted recover from the files which seems to pull out the thumbnail bit nothing else but what I have noticed is that if I look at HEX of one of the files it lists a load of filenames whichg are my images. Can anyone please advise me on the best way on going about recovering my images? I've got a good strong IT background but recovery is not one of my areas. I'm sure that you will probably need more information from me so please let me know and I'll get it posted ASAP. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! Many Thanks Ryan |

first of all: create an image of the CF card - and then remove the CF card and ONLY work with the image - independent from the tool you will later work with. This is possible with Winhex. As an alternative you could create the image with a free forensic imaging tool, e.g. FTK Imager or FTK Imager lite which support dd and e01. This is the most important step at the beginning. As you have Winhex you should prefer dd instead of e01. Then I am sure other colleagues will help you to continue work with the image. If it should not be possible to create the backup image your card has a bigger problem. But nevertheless be silent. |

Hi, forgot to mention something important: If you use an older card reader, it may happen that the card reader does not support newer cards (especially cards bigger than 2 GB - but sometimes this already happens at smaller cards). So first try to use another card reader or to read / restore the pictures via the camera and the camera software. |
