Trying to recover some MPEG2 files using Recovery by Type and I'm a little confused.

I had what I thought to be the correct file header for mpg's, 00 00 01 B3, but I noticed that in WinHex, they're shown as 00 00 01 BA. Are both valid? Is there a difference between MPEG1 and MPEG2 file headers? I have no files at the moment to even look at and compare.

Also, I don't understand how to find or define the "file footer". What should my entry be for recovering .mpg's? Or where can I find this info?

TIA

Tim

The actual file headers for the various sub types may indeed differ. Try the one you know, and if this does not cause WinHex to find any headers, try the other one.

If you don't know of a specific and unique footer, just recover with a fixed file size instead (the maximum file size you expect, you can shrink the files later anyway if necessary). Did you read the program help on this topic before posting? It even recommends not to recover with a footer, as most file types don't have a footer and in the case of .jpg files the footer is not a reliable indication of the file's end.

I am trying to recover my jpg files and mpg files for my baby. I want to know the Hex Signature and Offset number.
I search around, I found there is 00 00 01 Bx and 00 00 01 B3 and 00 00 01 BA for Hex Signature, but I can not find the Offset Number.
Can anyone help please. I knew I am so stupid that I didn't do a back up for 3 months, and my baby is only 3 months! I really want my baby's photos and mpg back! Thanks!

You can find these figures in the WinHex program help, but i recommend you use Davory instead of WinHex. It is easier to use.

For your file recovery searching, on your data disk you want to search for this.

00 00 01 BA 44 00 04

This seems to work for most mpeg 2 files.
Change it if it can't find any to

00 00 01 ba 44

Your offset number will be 0 because the mpeg files start with this header.

For your footer, I've found most mpeg 2 files end with

00 01 B9

I know no one has posted here for a while, but this may help others who see this page.

(Two MPEG file header signatures are predefined in WinHex.)

Hey all,
I am trying to recover files from a Compact Flash card (1GB) which has been formatted by a digital camera. I used the simple recovery tools for winhex and Davory but they did not retrieve anything, the only way I was able to recover the images was with a thoughrough recovery with WinHex. So I got the images back .. yay, however I have been told that there are also 4-5 videos on this camera. Again they do not come back with the normal recovery tools and I need to use the thoughrough option , but the videos are coming out huge (I set the max video size to 90meg just to be sure).

Is there an easier way to go about this? or am I pretty much just going to have to suck it and see?

Are you a registered user? If not, sorry, only the full version allows recovered files in excess of 200 KB.

00 00 01 BA <---header for SYSTEM mpg eg(video and audio)
00 00 01 B9 <---footer for SYSTEM mpg eg(video and audio)
also known as MPEG

00 00 01 B3 <---header for VIDEO mpg eg(video no audio)_
00 00 01 B7 <---footer for VIDEO mpg eg(video no audio)
also known as M1V

IMPORTANT NOTE: files must be coded in standard format for this headers and footers to be correct, best to just use headers and estimate the file size instead of using footers unless you know for a fact that the file was coded properly and is not broken else you might end up recovering the hole hard drive into one file :o(

hope this helps anyone looking for that information
