Hi! My hard disk recently crashed, and I am attempting to recover and rebuild. I had taken a file backup the day before the crash, so I have all my Excel, Word, Quicken etc. data. Unfortunately, I do not have access to my Outlook 2000 files. I had taken a backup of the PST file, but this is unreadable. Facts: --backup was done using software from CDRW vendor--worked like Windows explorer (drag and drop) for copy. This was not an "export" from Outlook --outlook MAY have been open at this time (not sure). --backup file (120 Meg) is about twice the size (60 meg) I had understood my Outlook Today files to be (based on right clicking the outlook folder and checking file size). --when I try to import from the saved file, or open it in Outlook, I get a message to the effect that "properties for this information service must be defined prior to use" and (referring to the saved file) "...not a personal folders file" --I know the CD copy is read-only, I then copied this to my hard disk before trying the Outlook read in and getting the messages above, file is not read-only --I have tried Microsoft and their facility for PST recovery--no dice What can I do to get at my data? I'd really like to get at the Contacts, Tasks, and Calendar entries even more than the saved emails...Can I use win-hex in some fashion to read the saved "pst" file, find the Contacts, etc., then copy to Excel or something else from which I can load data into Outlook (or even copy and paste text from the recovered file into Outlook for the items I want? Thanks! Any input appreciated. I will check back on this site, but would also appreciate suggestions being emailed to nsomniyak@aol.com Joe |

Unfortunately, .pst files usually do not contain cleartext such as e-mail addresses and message texts that you could manually locate and retrieve with WinHex. |

Dan, if you can / are allowed to send me the pst file I might be able to extract the infomation you want. I use a program called datasniffer to recover lost messages from peoples Email Accounts at work. It's normally OK at opening most pst files that Outlook can't. Failing which, you could try OutlookRecovery, they do a demo which shows how much of your data is recoverable. I've tried several of their products with varying success - but at $300 its a bit steep for such a basic program. Mac |

You can try Scanpst, which is available free from Microsoft and may have been installed on your system with Outlook. However, you may have to do some editing of the PST file first to make the application recover any messages. I use WinHex and "corrupt" about 20 bytes after the file header with 0x00 or random hex characters. Then, I run Scanpst. I've recovered thousands of messages through that process, when other tools failed. |

Same problem......... This message thread went quite...did everyone get a solution that they can share. I can see info I need in a file recovered but corrupt PST file using a bit scan. I really only need to recover contacts and really would like calendar. The trial pst recovery programs seem to not work. OnTrack seems to have the bet chance but their trial is NOT the real thing and no money back. Any help would be really appreciated. I sent a note to Mac on the Tuesday, July 13, 2004 - 11:15: who said he could help using "datasniffer" but got no reply. My email is linrjo@hotmail.com REALLY could use some knowledgeable assistance or at least point me to some info. |

hi all i had the above problem but i have posted the solution of another thread kindly have a look at it but if i may this is what i posted as the solution i think i have been able to do it, i curved out the files using winhex and got the many pst files then i got this application; Recovery For Outlook http://www.officerecovery.com/outlook/index.htm Which i have used to recover the emails then import recovered pst files to Microsoft outlook i am still doing it as at now but i am very hopefully i will get good results. My main worry is that i am getting very old mails like year 2004 and 2005 but none for 2006, i dont know if the pst's files i curved out are not part of the recent emails send but i am hoping i will get them. Also none of the pst recovered has no contacts. best wishes if you need more details just tok to me on my messanger gknjoroge@hotmail.com |
