Is there any way to fire up a search against a file containing a predefined list of words?

No, but you can concatenate search operations for different words using routines (one operation per routine) and have WinHex record all occurrences in the Position Manager. That way WinHex will search for all the words subsequently, without further user interaction once the first routine in a thread is started.
