Howdy ... complete newbie here.

I downloaded the Trace Demo Software yesterday for a trail basis. From my reading, it indicates Trace will handle/process history.dat, used by Mozilla and dcache4, used by Opera. Also, I read it will process the info2 files associated with the Recycle Bin.

Which option should I use to process Mozilla's history.dat? Using the File and Folder options didn't produce any results; however, using the Disk option on Logical C did, per se. Trace read through the sectors and displayed various data ... predominately URLs, but some other data that I don't really understand.

Would this approach (using the Logical Disk option; the dcache4 folder is on Logical Disk D) be the best approach to determine if Opera URL remnants are still present on a disk?

TIA,

The window that opened remained empty? If you could send us the history.dat file for examination, that would be helpful.

X-Ways Trace found index.dat files/records in allocated and free drive space.

> Would this approach [...] be best

No. From the program help: "When opening disks, X-Ways Trace will search for Internet Explorer index.dat file records only."

Thanks for your response, Stefan.

I've made some progress. I was able to process Mozilla's history.dat file using the approach you suggested above. It came somewhat as a surprise as I discovered a file was automatically created and written versus anything actually being displayed in the X-Ways Trace display window, "Analysis of history.dat". When the query asked whether or not I wanted to export the results to MS Excel was displayed, I noticed that a history.datExport.txt file was created ... so I looked at it in notepad and ... Voila!

I had expected something to be displayed in the Analysis of history.dat display window ... meaning a list of the actual URLs and any other pertinent applicable data, as had been when I ran the Open Disk option, but, as I have said, I am a newbie here and probably missed something in the Help file of the Demo software.

Is/are there limitations to the Demo software ... outside of the 500 lines thing?

However, taking the same approach, Open File, with Opera's global.dat file did not produce any real results ... and I know there are multiple URLs contained within the global.dat file as I can process it using other like software. I will keep trying the same approach on global.dat. BTW, a file did get created, i.e., global.dat Export.txt, but no URLs were written to this file ... it's essentially empty other than the columnar header information written to it, i.e.

"Date Date Other Date Other Date Prot. Domain Resource Cache Filename Size Ext. Count User Address Address"

I'm off to try to see if I can have any success with the info2 files of the Recycle Bin. Wish me luck! I'm sure the problems I'm encountering are because of my lack of thorough understanding how to use your product properly.

Thanks for your assistance.

Yes, this is what usually happens.

No, there isn't.

OK, back again.

Info2 file processing went well.

My error above in the previous post in the sense that I referenced Opera's global.dat file (it's processed by another product that I am evaluating). I meant to actually write "dcache4.url". I'm still having trouble with that at the moment. When I look at the contents of Opera's cache4 folder, there are quite a few .htm/.html, images (.gif, .jpg, .png), .ico references, along with a dcache4.url shortcut; however when I attempt to open the dcache.url (remember, it's a shortcut that I'm seeing - not sure if this is significant, or not) I receive the following message "Unable to parse this file - no entries found."

I should mention the Opera version is 8.54 and OS is Win98 SE that I'm testing on.

Will keep trying as time permits.

Take care.
