Hello, I am having problems with a Hard disk running as an add-on drive for a machine running windows NT 4.0 workstation (service pack 6a). After few days of continuosly writing binary files to the hard disk and on a reboot, the system does not come up. When I use Winhex and click on Tools>Open Disk and select the hard disk from the "Logical Drives" list, I get the error: "Possibly unable to determine the location of the file or directory "$MFT" on the volume. I used another tool and it says inconsistent mft and bad mft mirror. Can Winhex help me determine the cause of the corruption or atleast how to prevent it. Incidentally on checking out a disk which has been running for a few days and has NOT failed to boot up, Winhex gave the following message: "Unexpected level of fragmentation in a FILE record, sector 6291456 (MFT)" Please let me know if defragmenting the drive on a regular basis will prevent the error. Thanks, Raj |

Probably yes, if the defrag tool you use is capable of defragging the Master File Table (MFT) itself as well. However, I am unsure as to the exact cause of the drive's inability to boot. Windows should be able to deal with an NTFS volume no matter how badly fragmented it is. |
