Try running the graphical disk manager that is built-in in Windows by running the following:

compmgmt.msc /s

There is the disk manager among the things listed and it will display your current drive layout. Simply right-click the partition in question and choose to change the drive letter. Instead of changing, remove it completely. If a message comes up telling you that the drive letter can be removed but will actually remain active until you reboot, then Windows does not actually release the partition in question until that reboot.

Maybe mountvol does not actually clearly inform you of this.

Should be self-explanatory, but just to be clear: *If* that message comes up, Windows will still keep much of the important basic info in cache. You should cancel out of that message, try to close all application currently dealing with that partition and try again.

Or say OK and really do reboot.

If none of that helps, your problem lies elsewhere, e.g. manipulating the wrong data.
