I had a hard drive crash, and it turns out that somehow, Goback is part of the problem of me accessing the drive. Is there a way I can change the MBR of my damaged drive with WinHex? Goback uses a Type 44, and NTFS is Type 07. Thanks for the help

I don't know anything about "Goback", but yes, you can change the MBR with WinHex. Try Tools | Disk Editor | Physical Disks | Select your disk | OK.

Then use View | Template Manager | Master Boot Record | Apply -or- click the Access button | Partition 1 | Partition table (template).

You can easily change the operating system indicator (yes, 07=NTFS) and any other parameter in the partition table, using this template, for each partition.

The directions were GREAT! I was able to do this very easily, however, once I did this and switched the MBR Type from 44 to 07, the drive appeared but all the folder names were scrambled and unreadable. I switched it back to Type 44 and the drive remained the same, all the folder names were scrambled. Is there another copy of the MBR I can use, or is there another option I forgot to change?

Perhaps a re-boot will help.

There is no other copy that I know of.

> is there another option I forgot to change

For changing the partition type, no.

With an NTFS partition, there are always two copies of the boot sector. In NTFS/WinNT versions below 4.0 the copy of the boot sector is stored in the middle of the partition. In NTFS/WinNT versions 4.0 and greater, the copy of the boot sector is stored at the end of the disk.

The wonky names, could be caused by either modification of the MFT (Master File Table) by GoBack but I really don't know.

This should really help with finding the second copy of the boot sector.

NImbda, and others killed my working os...now I get a message that says autofs.chk not found...restarting system.

is this a mbr issue or something else? How do I recover my windows XP Home? I have a compressed "volume" that I cannot access, even as administrator under the recovery console. Any suggestions?

Here is what you can do to get rid of Goback. As the harddrive is booting up press CTRL + ALT and hold down while pressing "G" repeatedly (if its going into windows reset and try again). It'll come up with a GoBack message. Press "F" to force removal. After that reboot and all should be fine!

Note: If the drive with Goback is a slave drive, temporarily make it the master drive and do the above. After the Goback removal switch it back as a slave. Also, the mobo doesn't have to be the same one as when Goback was initially installed.

This info can be found on Symantec's website...

I have a hard deive from a Vista machine attached to my XP machine and I can not read the drive because of the GPT Protective Partition. Is there anything that I can do to the MBR to enable me to read the drive in my XP machine?

Thanks

You could edit the MBR partition table manually such that it matches the partitions defined by the GUID partition table. Then your Windows XP would see the partitions next time after rebooting.
