I have a CD-R that I would like some data back from. I can see by the rings on teh surface that the CD-R has data on it, but I can't get a CD drive to read it - it sounds like the CD drive is spinning the CD up and then down again, and then I get a windows 'device inaccessible - device not ready' error.

I have tried to open it in the disk editor in Winhex, but it only displays the CD-Rom as a logical drive and I get an 'error 10' when accessing the CD drive.

Do you have any suggestions?

Regards

Steve

Sorry, no idea. You could try accessing it as a physical disk under Windows NT/2000/XP, but I'm afraid that won't help either. WinHex is a powerful tool when it comes to recovering logically corrupt or lost data, but it cannot deal with physically unreadable media.

What does "error 6" mean? I cannot read from a CD-RW with WinHex 10.4

"Error 6" does not mean more than that sectors of a media could not be sucessfully read. A CD-RW can often be read if no software such as DirectCD is active. That way the CD-RW cannot be read in the Windows Explorer, but by the WinHex disk editor. You could either (temporarily) uninstall DirectCD or try to access the CD-RW on a system where it was not installed in the first place.

I have a CD/R that is still not closed under DirectCD, i.e. I am still able to drag and drop files onto it.

Whilst suing a screen show function of Roxio CD creator I accidently "deleted" a lot of .jpg photos from the cd.

I can still see the undeleted files on this CD and it is still under the control of direct CD.

Could winhex help me get these back??

Should I close the CD before I can do this.

Thanks for our help

Yes, there is chance. I recommend you try to open the CD-R either as a logical drive or physical disc (under Windows 2000/XP only) with WinHex or Davory (easier to use). Then try File Recovery by Type (try both JPEG subtypes if you don't know which one you have), without closing the CD (would perhaps diminish chances for recovery). If opening and reading the CD fails, try on a computer where DirectCD has never been installed.

I guess you would need a microscope, a needle, and a very steady hand.

What are the 2 types of jpeg files? Is that at
all related to the fact that some jpeg images on
the internet will load and others will not?

You don't need to know about the two JPEG subtypes "Exif" and "JFIF" any more when using the latest versions of our software.

No, has nothing to do with loading errors.

Are you sure that the CD-R has been finalised by the software that wrote it. With CD-Rs that are left 'open', you can see files if read by a CD/DVD writer but not with a CD-Rom/DVD-Rom drive.

I have an image of a CD that needs to be examined. X-Ways Forensics can read this image and after expanding the data overwiew, I see that there are 30,000 deleted files on the CD-R. Of course, the file names etc are not recovered. However, by examining the sectors manually, I can see that some directory structure and file names etc. are still there.

So this raises 2 questions:
1. How did this occur and why? If I do not close a writing session on a CD-R, I can "delete" files I wrote previously. Obviously the files are still there but the directory is updated etc. This is one way this condition could occur. But why would one do this? If I read the data
on a non-cdw device I wouldn't see the non-closed session. If one imaged this CD on such a drive, would this also cause what I am seeing?
2. Is there a way to fix things up so that the directory structure with file names aetc. links back up to the deleted files?
