I see in the program literature that it does not support FAT12 formatted media. This leads to two questions. First, what features will be missing when trying to deal with 3.5" floppies and digital camera memory cards? Second, since there are still many uses for floppies and memory cards are becoming even more popular, why can't FAT12 support be added? I think the WinHex program will be extremely useful in solving camera memory problems. |

Missing features when dealing with FAT12 media: WinHex cannot show the name of the file allocated to the currently displayed sector and it cannot list the clusters a given file occupies. Why FAT12 support can't be added: Who said it can't? ;-) It's on my to do list, among many other things, of course. The more I am convinced by users like you that it would be useful, the more likely I will implement this feature (soon). Thanks for your input! |

Stefan Thanks for your quick reply. I would urge you to add the FAT12 support for a particular and impelling reason. In the digital camera world, Smart Media and Compact Flash memory cards are common and rapidly increasing in use. There have been many problems with the cards and JPG files and comments abound on the camera forums. Your program was mentioned recently on the Olympus forum which is where I found it. When your program supports these memory cards a note on several of the forums will get a quick response from a world wide audience. Many users will be thankful for the programs usefulness. Best regards Ed |

Enhanced FAT12 support will be implemented in the upcoming WinHex version. |

Brilliant! It seems that most 'small' devices like PDA, Digital Cameras etc. tend to use FAT12 due to smaller FATs and lower memory needs. So, yes, it is very helpful that WINHEX support FAT12. - Carsten |

Stefan, I posted this under Advanced, but as a frustrating problem for owners of cameras, it probably should be in this area - as well as FAT 12, which I fully support. Does anybody know whether WinHex can read the illusive CIS data on removeable media (e.g check integrity, compare with backup copy, This subject which causes mass headaches with failed cards, seems difficult to get information about. I know that re-writing the table or low level format requires both a hardware controller and software, but can the data at least be read? |

As far as I know, WinHex unfortunately cannot access the CIS area of SmartMedia cards. |

Hi Stefan, If the FAT12 system can only handle 12bit addressing of Clusters each 16KBit, then it is maximum capcity is 64MB. And if all (most) digital cameras use FAT12 SD Flash cards, how can they possibly support larger Flash memory cards such as 128MB or 256MB? fawzi |

Who said all flash cards are formatted as FAT12? |

Hello Sir. My memory stick pro magicgate memory card shows some format error after 20-25 shots taken by Sony's DSC-S60 camera. & after transfering the images on to computer, some of the images get corrupted & some get white/grey bars at the bottom of pics. What is the problem & if the problem is with the format of the memory stick then where could I get the FAT 12 or anyother formatter ? |
