- How can I delete the results of the search with the X-WAYS TRACE?
- Are the data shown by TRACE contained in the index.dat file?
- X-WAYS Security can do this selectively? (i.e. without erasing the entire H.D. and/or without damaging the functionality of Internet Explorer?

X-Ways Trace is not a privacy tool. Therefore it will not clean up the results. The results produced are from index.dat and from former parts of index.dat.

To remove one's traces one has to erase and delete index.dat and to wipe the free space.

With Windows Vista one should be able to clean one's IE history. X-Ways Trace will reveal whether this had been done successfully.

X-ways SECURITY does help in deleting a selected index.dat file (and/or its content) or it only erases the entire H.D. ?

It either erases
- selected files (if not locked by the operating system),
- all free space and slack space (which covers files that were deleted in the conventional way before),
- entire partitions
- entire disks

In other words, totally up to you, as described on the product web page.

I have just moved this discussion because you did not post on an appropriate page.

Below you find instructions on how to get rid of the Internet Explorer's index.dat entries as thoroughly as possible:

1) Log on to Windows under a different username (ideal a newly created account for temporary use), such that the index.dat files are no longer locked in Windows.

2) Delete all index.dat files in all subdirectories (in the user profile(s) and in the browser cache directory/temporary internet files) normally, e.g. with the command "del index.dat /s".

3) With X-Ways Security ( http://www.x-ways.net/security/ ) you then erase all free space and slack space on the drive. That will wipe all data from the files you have just deleted as well as all copies of index.dat files that were deleted earlier (e.g. by the Internet Explorer itself).
