Hello, I have a WD external hardrive with a capacity of 160GB. My OS is Windows XP. When i plug the USB drive in, I can only see it under Device Manager. (Not under My Computer or Disk Management). I used WinHex to open the physical drive. But when i open it, i get the following result. http://i42.tinypic.com/2dv6ibd.jpg As you can see, WinHex does not read any sectors from the drive and only provides limited information about on the the left panel. What could be the reasons that WinHex fails to load the disk? What can i do to resolve this first issue? Thanks, -Ash |

You can also see on the screenshot that Windows told WinHex that the disk has a size of 0 Bytes. That's why no data is read. I don't know how to resolve this. |

Hi, first of all you should check the external HD under another computer. If it works there, something is wrong with your XP/Vista installation. Such things sometimes happen with USB. If you need your files very urgent, take the HD out of the external case and take it into your or another computer. In most cases it will work. If not you have problems with your HD. Don't forget to modify the jumper settings when using an IDE HD. |

Forgot something important: In the case that the HD is a 2,5 inch external HD: they often have no external power supply. In this case the power comes from the computer. It often happens that there is not enough power to run the external HD with the effect that XP has problems recognizing the HD. Try to use another USB port - or better: if possible use the special cable with 3 USB connections - connect TWO on the computer to obtain more power (or use an external power supply with 5 Volt DC). Some years ago it happened to me that I made a backup with XWF - and suddenly there was too less power. XWF continued with the backup and gave out error messages (bad clusters). I needed a while to find out that not the HD is bad but the HD was lost. Jumper settings on an IDE (wide cable with 40/80 connections): There is a jumper to set Master / Slave. You have to set it correct - if you don't know what I talk about google for it. Merry Christmas! |
