Checking partition C: with Recuva (utility to restore deleted files) I discovered that it found around 8000 old files (many of them can be recovered). I've run "X-Ways Security" tool asking it to wipe "Unused space" + "NTFS file records" (as long with other two options: free clusters and slack space). Then I've started Recuva again and see that all deleted files in the list (around 8000) are still untouched. Many of them are in excellent condition to recover. Does it mean that "X-Ways Security" tool can not remove old file names of all deleted files? And if it's true and "X-Ways Security" tool can not remove old file names, then what wipe "Unused space" + "NTFS file records" option is for? |

Hi, If you have a FAT16 / FAT32 partition X-Ways Security will NOT delete the filenames. But it should overwrite free space and unallocated clusters so that files can no longer be seen. Did you run X-Ways Security under Vista? |

I'm sorry that I did not mention that important detail in my initial post. It's NTFS. And I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 with all latest updates installed. |

Maybe the explanation is simply that you do not have a legitimate, paid full version of X-Ways Security. |

WinHEX did the job well. I guess it's a bug in "X-Ways Security". When I run it with only one option enabled "NTFS file records" and while keeping the other two options disabled (free clusters and slack space) - it cleared MFT file records as well. |

I just ran Winhex addon 15.0 this night on a 750 GB SATA HD. The speed started with 5,5 GB/min to reach 480 MB/min this morning at a wipefile size of in about 500 GB. When calculating 15 hours for 500 GB the average is at in about 550 MB /min. Would it speed up when creating a second / third file? And: As it writes the file to root: Does it work at Vista at all? |

Only for your information (in case you should update security because of the message of whu): When trying to wipe a diskette physically on XP 64 Bit I get the message: (german) Das Programm bzw. die Funktion "\??\C:\Program Files (x86)\XW-Security\external.dll" kann aufgrund einer Inkompatibilität mit 64 Bit Versionen von Windows nicht gestartet bzw. ausgeführt werden. Wenden Sie sich an den Softwarehersteller, um zu erfahren, ob eine mit Windows-64-Bit kompatible Version verfügbar ist. Done with this message. Not urgent as I know several more proposals. Additional information: I wiped the same 750 GB HD with Diskjockey pro in 2 hours and 35 minutes completely. |

You can delete that file "external.dll", it's not needed under successors of Windows NT. |
