Please help !! I have a corrupt zip disk with a crc32 error and need an application to repair it. We have used zip magic & pkunzip to no avail. Its a service history file (30 mb) and I'm lost without it. We sent discs to Ontrak but they were unable to repair the file. Thanks, Steve Mangels |

WinHex cannot repair disks, it can only help you to recover as much data as possible from sectors that are still readable. I recommend you start with cloning or imaging the disk using the Clone Disk function (with the option "Log procedure silently, no error messages" enabled). |

You can try recovering this file as described in the program help (chapter "Datenrettung" in German). You can also find the instructions here on the forum (manual or automated recovery). If you have further questions to any of the mentioned details, please don't hesitate to ask on the appropriate forum page or directly by e-mail. |

Hello, I have a NTFS partition with a bad block, thus causing my system to not recocnize the partition type, and not allowing access to the drive partition. This is the second partition on the drive, and windows nt will boot. Can I access the information on the drive with this utility? |

| | Posted on Saturday, Mar 16, 2002 - 18:31: | |
Probably yes, although only in a "raw" format. You could open the physical disk with the disk editor, then click the Access button, and open the second partition from the popup menu. You could also try if Tools | Disk Tools | List File Clusters works, so you could find and copy specific files off the drive more conveniently, but I'm not sure this will work in this case. |

Hi, I have a zip archive that I compressed using a password. Unfortunatly, it won't open again ! It tells me the password is incorrect (even though I know it's not). Could you please tell me if there is a way to recover my data with WinHex please ? Thank you in advance for your help. big.cheek@infonie.fr |

You could perhaps retrieve the filenames and the files' dates using the WinHex .zip file templates (/a on the web site). |

Download the template files from the web site (and read the explanations) and save them into the folder where WinHex is installed. Open the .zip file in WinHex and apply the templates using View | Template Manager. |

Thank you for giving me the link. I tried the four templates for the zip files, but I get some error messages. Some times, I don't, I just get a box with some information about the zip file. I read the explanations, but I still don't know what to do. In order to make it easier for you, I put online the messages I get. Here is the link to them: http://m.rose.chez.tiscali.fr/winhex-zip-templates.htm I wish you to know that I really apreciate your help, and that I'm thankfull to you (sorry if my english is not too good but I'm french). |

Sorry, I am unable to tell why you receive some errors. Perhaps this is due to the encrypted state of the .zip file, or because the .zip file is damaged, or you applied the template in an incorrect way (the cursor was not at the correct offset, this is always the case when you get the "does not meet the requirements" message), or the template definitions are not 100% correct. All I can say is they work correctly here with the .zip files I tried. They are provided just provided for your convenience, without any guarantees. |

Hey Big Cheek, I figured out how to get what you want... that is the file and directory info, regardless of whether encryption has been used or not. I'll follow this up with another post. Chris |

Well, in each of the ZIP templates, there is a line that starts with "requires 0" (excluding the quotes). You'll notice that there is a no. following that, eg. requires 0 "504B0102" Copy the string without the quotes. Then, with the zip file open in WH, use the string to do a hex search. WH will then take you to the position of that string. Then, apply any ZIP template you want. All the ZIP templates explicitly require the hex search, with the exception of "ZIP Local File Header Structure", which alternatively accepts the cursor placed at 0 offset. Now, you should be able to apply all the ZIP templates without any problems. Hope that helps! -Chris |

Using the ZIP scripts, you can get the file block you want. However, to decompress it (the extracted block from the file) you'd have to get in touch with a developer involved in developing software using the ZIP format or its creators. If its encrypted, then its a whole different issue. -Chris |

Qn: Can you open the archive normally with any ZIP program? The reason I'm asking, is because you in your first thread, you said that you entered the right password, even though the ZIP app doesn't accept it? Try some other app, like PKWare or 7-Zip or 12-Ghosts Zip. If the file has some corrupted bits, you could use PKWare's ZIP fixer (not sure what its called), which fixes ZIPs really well. Although, its been a good 5-6 years since I used it. -Chris |

Help! I am very computer illterate and need very simple instructions! 10 days ago, my husband's friend from work (the IT specialist) came to 'sort out' our pc: defragment, move files from the C to D drive, etc, to help free up some space and speed us up a bit. Since then however, I can no longer open JPEG files (90% of our photos!)or use the Sony Smart Capture application (which automatically uses the JPEG format) to download photos from our digital camera. Can anyone tell me how to get JPEG back?! |

Thanks Chris & Stefan, Hubbie's friend is trying everything, but he's now gone back to London (we live in Tokyo). I was just trying another avenue. I've already uninstalled the application then reinstalled it, but no joy. It's not just jpeg files, I've discovered, but any file with the microsoft windows logo. I'm told there's 'no programme associated' etc |

Chris
| | Posted on Wednesday, Jul 10, 2002 - 17:08: | |
Thats alright then! You just have to get the associations right. BTW, ALL UNKNOWN FILE TYPES (that is, those that don't have any application associated with them to open with. eg. BMP will usually open in MS Paint, but if the association is lost, it will default to the Windows logo) will have the MS Windows logo. Click on a JPEG file, then hold the Shift key. Now, right-click on the same file with the Shift key still pressed down. You will now see in the menu, an option called "Open with". Click it. You will now see a list of programs on your computer. Look for the application that you want JPEG files to open with and select it. After you've chosen the app, check (as in tick mark) the box below which says something like "Always use the selected program to open this type of file." Click Ok and you should have it working properly now. Follow the same steps for all files that have lost their associations. Hope that helps! |

I cannot open some of my JPEG or Tiff Image files in PShop or PSP. It tells me that it cannot open document because of unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found. I do not have a clue how this could be, because just recently all of those files were ok. Please advise |

The reason is probably an error in the file system, for example in the file allocation table, whose damage possibly cannot be undone automatically, I'm afraid. |

Hi! I recently used my PNY 128 CF card with my Cannon digital camera on our family vacation trip. After about half way through, there were a few pictures I couldn't view using the camera, and it showed "CF Card Error", although pictures taken before and after that seemed to be fine. I tried to delete those pictures and found out that now, I have these "CF Card Error" shifted back to what used to be "good pictures" and eventually I lost all pictures. Now, I can't view the data either through the camera or the card reader, although the data is still there becuase it shows there is only 67M free memory on the card reader drive. Would I be able to recover these pictures, and how should I do it? Thanks!! |

Dear Stefan, I tried the instructions. It did recognize all the files (67 files in total) but when I access the output jpg files, all of them only show the top 1/4 of the picture, with the rest just in plain color. Is this because I was using the trial version (it did not tell me that I needed the full version for full recovery during the recovery process) or there is something wrong with my original data? Thanks! |

I guess that you used "File Recovery by Type". This recovers files at whatever fixed size you specify. By default this is 200,000 bytes, and 200,000 bytes is also the maximum file size allowed in the evaluation version. So if your files are usually about 800 KB in size, this explains why you see only 1/4 of the picture. |

Sorry, no, I am unable to guarantee that the files were stored in discontiguous clusters. If they were fragmented, the pictures will be incomplete. However, if the card was initially empty, and you took the pictures one by one, without deleting some of them in between, you can be sure that the files are not fragmented. |

Hi, I also used Active@ Partition Recovery to see what's left on my hard drive. I can see the whole partition that i wanted to restore, much more, i can preview the file that i want. but active partition recovery is not able to write the partition back to my hard drive. I was able to get the starting sector and the ending sector of the partition i want to recover... are these info useful if i want to use winhex? will winhex be able to make that partition visible with these info? or at least, restore the file that i want, it is huge though, the single file is 2.7GB i think, it is an image file of my whole hard drive, so if i can get that, i would be able to get what i want... if not, all the files that i need was in a folder named "restore", and i think it would be much harder to recover numerous files that way, or if not correct me. thanks. |

Hello there Just ran across your website trying to solve a digital camera problem. I'm getting an error message of "Could not open the document because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete)". ... Can you software help in this type of situation? Thank you |

I tried your instructions to find my daughter's pictures from Europe after she accidently reformatted her camera. by type it said 0 headers and 0 files found - by name it said memstick.ind (0 bytes) unrecoverable data recovery - files , 400 kb. 2 files recovered and saved in the output folder (400kb). One file had 1 picture that she had taken after the reformat and the other folder (the one we need) was empty. I really appreciate your help and wonder if there is any further help from this point. If you look at the card in physical mode and move to sector e.g. 200 as an example then scan through the 'drive' to determine if there is data (will look like junk) or contiguous characters (00 00 00 or F7 F7 F7) etc. If there are contiguous characters, this indicates that the format is destructive. I have recovered MANY hd's zip disks and flashram drives using knoppix and knoppix variants in a ROOT SHELL type dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/hda this makes a clone of the drive bit for bit byte for byte then you can turn on the flags or use Helix (Linux live CD) to recover them 4 you... for killing off any dat you don't want on a drive you can do a dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda trust me it will be history. you will have to use use QT parted to reastablish partition like fat16 /32/ntfs/xfs or whatever... |

Whether or not WinHex can help you will depend greatly on the actual error. The error message seems to me like a camera error message. You should try accessing the card directly from a computer, i.e. insert it into a card reader, and then use WinHex to find out if there is anything, WinHex can help you with. Alternatively, feel free to contact us and use our Data Recovery Service. |

If only the partition table was corrupted, all the files on that partition are fully recoverable. If WinHex does not auto-detect the lost partition, you could search that partition's boot sector and use Tools | Disk Tools | Interpret As Partition Start to render the partition and all the files and directories easily accessible in WinHex. |

If you are sure you have copies of the photos from the card. Try formatting the card using the camera. Some cameras do not recognise files deleted using HFS (MAC) Mike |
