WinHex 9.95 Beta is available for download. What's new?

* Modified bytes are optionally displayed in a different color.

* WinHex now allows to compare not only files, but also disk sectors, using File Manager | Compare. You may also start a comparison at different offsets within the two files/disks.

* Appropriate menu commands have been moved to the new "View" menu.

* When carrying out long operations, WinHex gives you an idea about the remaining time in minutes.

* In the Set Disk Parameters dialog, WinHex now lets you specify how many total sectors to assume on a physical hard disk. (WinHex 9.92 SR-2)

* A bug in the Synchronize & Compare function was fixed. (WinHex 9.92 SR-1)

* Some minor improvements.

* More to come. I plan to add scripting ability (details). This feature will be available for owners of a professional license only.

Please post any suggestions and error reports concerning this beta version right here or send them via e-mail.

What would the upgrade cost be to move from a Student license to a Professional license?

Thanks.

Probably about the price difference between your original private license and the current professional license price.

Should I buy WinHex Pro Lic. now or should I wait for v10?

It would probably be a bit cheaper to order the professional license now rather than a private license plus a later upgrade.

Yes, future versions are free for at least 12 months after purchasing.

When is v10 going to out?

Also, I came across another hex-editor at www.expertcomsoft.com. They have Hex-Edit. I was wondering what differences are there between WinHex & Hex-Edit. Also, it is for $30, where as yours is for $63.50.

I would appreciate it if you could _justify_ why I should buy WinHex...

Thanks!

v10: I do not know yet. As you can see in the other thread, currently I am just planning it.

The private license for WinHex is about US$ 35, and for those additional $5 you get powerful additional features (such as disk editor, RAM editor, disk cloning/imaging, data recovery functions, computer forensics functions, secure disk/file wiping, file conversion, template editing, routine execution, and more). Just see the feature list, see the program, and figure.

If you plan to make use of the planned scripting functionality (you mentioned the price of the professional license): there is no such thing in HexEdit.

Granted, that WinHex is way superior to Hex-Edit! But, could you detail a few uses of Scripting...

So I'll be placing an order for WinHex Pro on the 13th of this month, since its my b'day!

I would like to know why do you charge for incremental upgrades i.e. from 9.1 to 9.2? When other developers charge for major upgrades i.e. 4.0 to 5.0!

Thanks, I will gladly expect your order.

I would never charge for the small step from 9.1 to 9.2, don't know why you say so. Would you find it fair to charge for an upgrade to 5.0 if a customer has paid for 4.9, only because 5.0 is a major change in the version number? Probably not. I charge for upgrades only after lots of improvements have been made (see the newsletter archive for a history) and if the regular prize has become more expensive (yes, WinHex was considerably cheaper, say, 2 years ago), regardless of the version numbers.

WinHex 9.4 was released in May 2000, and users who purchased that version still get the latest version (and probably also WinHex 10.0) for free. Since I do many small, incremental improvements and version steps rather than rare big steps, I do not care for "full" version numbers such as 9.0, 10.0, etc. when it comes to the decision if an update is free or not. I hope this helps.

Hi, sorry I forgot to explain that. The Compare command can only be used with open edit windows any more, so you have to open at least two files/disks before using this command.

With the release of WinHex 10.0, WinHex 9.95 Beta becomes obsolete and is no longer available for download.
