WinHex 10.1 will allow you to use the brand-new WinHex API (application programming interface) in your own C/C++, Delphi, or Visual Basic programs. I will post here again once a beta version of WinHex 10.1 is available.

Meanwhile there is a service release 6 of WinHex 10.0 ready for download. Aside from minor bugs I had to fix, there are three new script commands:

Assign MyVar Value assigns a new value to the variable "MyVar".

Encrypt "My Password" encrypts the active file or disk, or selected block thereof, with the specified key.

Decrypt "My Password" decrypts the active file or disk.

The maximum number of variables in scripts is now 16.

WinHex 10.1 Beta is now available here. It requires an existing installation of WinHex 10.0 SR-4 (or newer). The following has been added to the scripting functionality:

Inc MyVar interprets the variable as an integer and increments it by one. Useful for loops.

Dec MyVar does the opposite.

CopyIntoNewFile Param now also allows "+" concatenations for the parameter. E.g. you may use "D:\File +MyVar+.txt". The variable will be interpreted as an integer if that would not be larger than 2^24.

Besides, WinHex 10.1 now allows to access CD-ROM and DVD drives as *physical* media under Windows NT/2000/XP. Physical access is preferable e.g. if the boot sector is damaged or if the file system is unknown to the operating system.

A new beta version is now available that introduces the following features:

* WinHex now optionally ignores read errors when searching. Useful when working on physically damaged disks.

* Template windows can now be printed from the system menu.

* WinHex will detect if open files have been modified outside and offer to reload.

Could you give an example of what the new Encrypt and Decrypt active file or disk might be used for?

thanks.

Yes, encryption is used to keep other people from viewing one's data. Only someone who knows the key used for encryption will be able to decrypt the data (symmetric algorithm). Please see the WinHex knowledge base for tutorials on cryptography.
