Install the current version into the folder of your existing WinHex installation, using the setup program. There is no need for prior uninstalling. In case you have modified the preset templates, scripts or the file type definition file, make a backup first. The existing version must not be running when installing, of course. If you encounter problems, please restart Windows. More about upgrading.

WinHex does not store its configuration in the system registry. No initialization files are created in the Windows directory. Instead WinHex uses its own file “WinHex.cfg”, located in the WinHex folder.

WinHex runs under Windows 2000, and Windows XP. WinHex 12.8 was the last version to support Windows 98 [SE] and Windows Me. WinHex 7.54 was the last version to support Windows 3.1x.

Template editing is supported since WinHex 9.3. Please feel encouraged to contribute your own templates. Additional templates for download.

The file format of backup files (WHX files) is fully standardized, ensures backwards and forwards compatibility, and provides room for future extensions. Have a look at the format specifications.

WinHex is fully Year 2000 Compliant. Hint for prudent long-term thinkers: WinHex even is ready for the year 2100 (if your computer is, too)!
